Don’t let the cover art fool you. This is not a Beach Boys’ parody album sung by a “special” boy and his musical cat. This is Todd Congelliere’s Clown Sounds + Clown Frowns. 23 songs by Todd, recorded throughout the past few years in the Recess Records Clown Sound Studio (converted garage).
In case you don’t know who Todd is, here is a short list of facts and achievements:
1. He was the lead singer of F.Y.P
2. In the ‘90s he was a pro skateboarder.
3. He owns and runs Recess Records.
4. He plays pick-up basketball games at his local YMCA.
5. He is the lead singer of Toys That Kill, FYP , Underground Railroad to Candyland and Stoned At Heart.
6. The kid is constantly on tour and not just in America.
7. When Tony Hawk and Shaun White throw parties, Todd is the DJ.
8. He totally knows Mike Watt (Minutemen ect. ect. ect.)!
Some of these songs have appeared on other record labels in the form of a split cassette w/ Jacob Hamilton (Clown Frown – People’s Republic Of Rock And Roll) and two 7-Inches (People In The Sand – Ol’ Tennis Shoes / Dangerous Intersections Vol. III – Traffic Street), but this CD has all that, plus 13 unreleased songs (Clown Sounds).
Here’s what Razorcake magazine had to say:
TODD CONGELLIERE - CLOWN FROWN (Split Cassette)
A batch of weirdly off-kilter yet catchy pop songs. Again, solid work; Congelliere’s stuff manages to be both bouncy and somber as fuck, and he does it in a way that I just can’t figure out. Weird songs that are surprisingly evocative.
TODD CONGELLIERE - PEOPLE IN THE SAND (7-Inch)
Todd C., of F.Y.P, Toys That Kill, Underground Railroad To Candyland, and Recess Records is a humble guy. When I saw this record sitting around and asked him if I could have a copy, he became embarrassed. He’s super comfortable with getting excited about bands he’s put out, like The Arrivals and the Bananas, but turn the conversation directly to his personal music, and … let’s just say we both get uncomfortable. I hate words like “genius” (unless you figure out cold fusion or discover a sustainable model for DIY punk worldwide, where musicians get paid as well as plumbers), but I think Todd’s a really, really smart guy, a creative and courageous musician. When I’m talking about him and say, “This is great singer-songwriter stuff. If you liked the feel of Bird Roughs, this isn’t that far from it,” please don’t picture Todd being a douchenozzle, petting his ego with a feather while glazing himself in self-importance like a winter ham, but a guy playing stripped-down, slower songs that are pleasing, odd in Todd ways, and a nice, “makes sense” addition to his catalog. Imagine a movie like The Life Aquatic without the preciousness but all of the charm and wit. Are there really only fifty of these or is this part of a limited press?
The liner notes features a story Mike Watt originally wrote to be the liner notes for BLACK FLAG’s EP, The Process Of Weeding Out. I assume it didn’t make the cut because Greg Ginn thought it was too goddamn strange. That is why it is perfect for this release, rad dudes letting their freak flags fly. What more can I say, check it out while you’re doing the dishes, you lowdown punk!
